One reveiwer wrote that Parra’s style reflected a combination of Marc Chagall meets your child’s best refrigerator art. With heavy influences of Mexican and American folk art, Day-of-the-Dead art, Mesoamerican artifacts coupled with early-twentieth-century fashion and style, Parra creates a unique flavor in the area of picture books.

John Parra is an award-winning artist, illustrator, author and educator, best known for his Latino-themed children’s picture books. He has received many accolades including three American Library Association’s Pura Belpré honors, Two Golden Kite awards from the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, a Christopher’s Award and his work on, Frida Kahlo and Her Animalitos, was named a New York Times Best Illustrated Children’s Book of the Year. His new book, Growing an Artist: The Story of a Landscaper and His Son, is his debut as both author and illustrator and has already received four-starred reviews.
